How it Works:
Not everyone has the need to purchase their own roof tent, and we're not all fortunate enough to have the space to store one when it's not in use. That's why we created Tents Up Top, so that everyone can have the chance to enjoy a more comfortable way to get outdoors in North East Scotland.
Our roof tent hire starts with your online booking. The full availability of our roof tents can be viewed on the calendar within the website. Once you have found the type of roof tent for your trip you can then select a hire start date & time and confirm the duration. Hires are organised into 24-hour time slots and due to the need for proper cleaning, installation and checking over of tents we operate a 72-hour minimum hire period and we always block a 2-hour minimum between hires to allow us to service tents properly.
We require the hire to be paid for at the time of booking via the checkout on the website. There is a £250 refundable security deposit on all hires, which is used in part or whole to cover any damage sustained while the roof tent is in your care. The security deposit can either be paid by card online at the time of booking or by cash in person when collecting the roof tent.
On the date of your collection you should arrive at our premises at your chosen start time. We understand that sometimes life happens and you may be delayed but would ask that you contact us giving as much notice as possible. If we can accommodate a late arrival we will also amend your booking to extend the return time although this isn't always possible and we will confirm at the time of collection.

When you arrive you must bring the vehicle that the tent is to be installed on and it should be equipped with suitable roof bars. Our roof tents can be fitted to almost any make and model of roof rack / cross bar, but they do not install directly on to the car's roof:

Before fitting the tent to your car your ID needs to be verified using a government issued (not expired!) photographic ID (Driver's license, passport etc.). If you've not chosen to pay the security deposit online then this requires to be paid in cash.
We will confirm your roof bars are suitable and then proceed to install the tent on to your bars using our forklift and fitting brackets. You should also confirm that you're happy with the installation since you will be responsible for any loss or damage once you leave.
Once installed we will show you how to setup the tent and explain the features of it to you before showing how to stow it for transport. Feel free to ask questions - we're all very patient and want to make sure you have a great time away. The installation and handover normally takes 30-60 minutes.
Your roof tent will have already been checked and cleaned prior to your arrival, but you should also check it over to ensure you're happy.

If you have any problems whatsoever when you're away then you should contact us and we will do what we can to rectify.

On return, you should proceed to our premises (same address as collection) within the booked time. Life happens, so if you are going to be delayed please get in touch with as much notice as possible and we will see what we can do to accommodate. Unfortunately late returns will incur an additional 24-hour hire charge and hire charges will continue to accrue on a daily basis until the roof tent is returned per the T&C's.

One of us will be on-site to meet you where upon we will remove the roof tent from your vehicle. You should let us know about any problems / damage etc at drop-off. If you have paid the security deposit by card online, then you are free to leave as deposits will be refunded within 3-5 working days back to the original payment card once we have checked and cleaned the tent. If you have paid the security deposit in cash then we will check the roof tent over (this includes unfolding and checking the interior) for damage and then refund your deposit in cash. The drop-off process normally takes us 15 minutes if you've paid the deposit online but 30-60 minutes if you have paid in cash.
FAQs:
Here are some of our frequently asked questions:
-
Will your roof tents fit my car?
-
This is both easy and hard to answer. The roof tents will securely affix to pretty much any kind of cross bar / roof rack using U-brackets and lock nuts. However, they will not fit on to cars equipped with only roof rails or gutters - you must supply a roof bar (Thule or similar) for the tent to fix to. If you're at all unsure then please get in touch and send us a photo and we can confirm before booking.
-
-
Do you rent roof bars too?
-
No. Although we do have a small selection of Thule roof bars and fitting kits. It is by no means an exhaustive stock but we will do our best to get you out there. Contact us before booking and we'll check to see if we have something that will fit.
-
-
Where can I go with my roof tent?
-
Anywhere in the UK! We can give you some itinerary ideas if you're looking for some inspiration. You should familiarise yourself with local laws and restrictions on wild camping / where you can and can't take motor vehicles as both will apply to roof tents.
-
-
Is there anything I can't do with the roof tent?
-
Yes. We ask that hirers do not smoke, eat, drink or have pets in the roof tents which is for the benefit of the next hirer. If roof tents are returned to us in a poor state of cleanliness we will deduct a cleaning surcharge from your security deposit. You also should not take our tents anywhere or do anything with or in them that is illegal, immoral or which could otherwise negatively impact the reputation of Tents Up Top.
-
-
What's included in the hire?
-
We will supply the tent and facilitate the installation and removal at the start & end of the hire period. The tents all have built-in foam mattresses with removable covers which are washed frequently. You will need to supply the vehicle with suitable bars / rack, bedding inc. pillows and anything else you might need to go camping. All of the tents come with extendable ladders for getting in and & out.
